Press Release

Meeting between the Military Council and “No Military Trials for Civilians” group.

Upon the invitation of the Military Council a delegation from “No Military Trials for Civilians” group will meet a number of the Council representatives on the morning of Monday, June 13th 2011.

The group was surprised to receive the invitation, as we have sent the items that we have called-for more than once and we have advocated for investigating the practices of some members of the army and military police towards citizen. There have been a number of recommendations at several conferences and from a number of political entities, yet, there was no positive response to our calls or stopping of such practices.

What we will put forward:

Ceasing the referral of civilians to military trials, and to refer them to the public prosecutor and regular trials. Also, to direct the military and civilian police not to refer anyone to military prosecution unless in cases of committing crimes inside the premises of armed forces. In addition, issuing a statement within a week of the meeting to undertake not to refer civilians to any type of military courts;

Protecting peaceful gatherings, such as demonstrations, sit-ins and strikes, as being recognized among the revolution’s achievements, and not to target their participants (such as Petrojet workers who are being tried by the military now);

Disclosing he numbers and details of all civilians who were submitted to military courts, since January 25th 2011, till now, and arranging for  re-trials for all of them in front of their natural judge, within a declared and expedited timetable;

Annulment of all courts’ sentences against the revolutionary youth-including suspended sentences- and carrying-out the promised to release the rest of the detained revolutionary youth;

Investigating the violations committed by some members of the Army and Military Police towards citizens (physical attacks, torture, virginity tests, etc…) and setting up a timetable for the investigation process as well as announcing the results of the investigations;

Issuing a formal apology for the violations committed by some members of the Army and Military Police toward citizen and compensating the victims of torture and the unjust military trials.

Bearing in mind that the group will issue a press release upon completion of the meeting to announce its outcome.
